25 aprile Celebrating freedom, tradition and love
April 25 holds a double significance for Italy and for Venice. It marks the Anniversary of the Liberation from Nazi-Fascist occupation — a day when the country celebrates the end of World War II and the restoration of freedom and democracy in 1945. It’s a moment of remembrance and reflection that unites all Italians.

For Venetians, April 25 is also St. Mark’s Day, honoring the city’s patron saint. On this special day, Venice is adorned with its iconic Marcian flag, and the tradition of the bòcolo — a red rose given by lovers to their beloved as a symbol of love and devotion — is joyfully renewed.
The history of the “Bocolo”
Legend has it that Maria, the daughter of a Venetian nobleman, was in love with Tancredi, a humble soldier. To prove his worth, Tancredi went off to war, where he was fatally wounded in battle. Before dying, he sent Maria a rose stained with his blood. She received it on April 25 and died of a broken heart the next day. Since then, the bòcolo has come to symbolize eternal love.
